Trick or Treating on Main St.

Our town has a T or T thing for the local kids each fall...gives the kids a chance to wear their costumes an extra time so we always go.  Here are some pictures from this weekend.

Had a lazy weekend

but we did start it out by going to the pumpkin patch with the kids.  We had a lot of fun and the kids really enjoyed spending the time running around and playing with everything.  We already have our big jack-o-lantern carving pumpkin, so this was just a chance to get out and have fun together and let the boys pick a small pumpkin each.

We ended up going on Thursday, which meant that we missed being able to go to the corn maze (they only have it during the weekend), but since Dwight was able to come home early on Thursday, it made more sense to go that evening rather than on Friday, when it was scheduled to rain.  Since it actually did rain a lot that day, it turned out to be the right call for sure.

Giving credit where credit is due

It takes a big man to take a situation that has gotten out of hand and make things right.  Giant kudos to John McCain!  Thank you for trying to reel in the fear.  I certainly respect him for doing this.

I can't even explain why this is so funny...

but it's hilarious!!  Dwight and I were cracking up watching this on SNL last weekend.

Noah's Dome

In History and Art we are working on the Renaissance and Noah has been studying Brunelleschi's  Il Duomo in Florence.  Recently he had to design a blueprint for his own dome and today we were able to build the dome that he designed.  I was really impressed with the way he made his skull lantern on the top look three-dimensional.  He made two skulls and then cut a slit in each of them to connect them together. 

He said that this was his favorite art project so far.  Made me really happy...:)

Abundance of Scarecrows

Apparently Hoschton, GA decided to try to break the World Record for "Most Scarecrows in One Location"  The existing record was 3,311 in Cincinnati.  Well, it appears that they broke the record and ended up with 5,441 scarecrows.  Here are a few of them:

 

 

Maybe we will have to check that out this fall :O)

For all of you non-Atlantans

I found a video of the gas line at the QT about 5 miles down the road from our house.  I know I have been telling my family about the craziness that was looking for gas over the last month, but this shows exactly what we were having to deal with.  NO ONE would have gas, literally for MILES, and then one station would get gas and everyone would swarm in to get it.  It was insane but, knock-on-wood, I think it's over. 

 

Not much going on this weekend...

Just glad that the week is over.  We finally have gas in Atlanta again-with no lines, to boot- so that is another problem that is hopefully behind us.  I tell you what...that was INSANE!!!

 

Last weekend Noah and I went to the High Museum to see the Medieval and Renaissance Art exhibit that is on display there right now.  We recently finished a unit on the Middle Ages and we are working on the Italian Renaissance right now, so it was exciting for both of us to see some paintings, sculptures, and other works of art that were anywhere from 500-1500 years old.  We saw actual pieces from the very artists that we have been studying.  The most exciting part of the exhibit was one of Leonardo Da Vinci's actual notebooks.  It was in a display case and there was a computer next to it that had all of the pages scanned in that you could view each page, zoom in, and get a translation of the text.  It was awe-inspiring, seeing it right there. 

 

They had other exhibits there as well and we ventured through every one.  There was a contemporary art exhibit, a paper-works art exhibit, and a civil rights exhibit.  I really enjoyed seeing Noah's reaction to each one, since this was the first time we had been to a museum that wasn't necessarily geared toward children. He seemed to enjoy going to a "grown-up" museum, LOL. This is the one thing that I am really loving about our homeschool journey so far...having time to do things like this with him and watching him take it all in.
